In no particular order…
Settlers of Catan. Or Risk, or any other strategy game like it. Even when they go on for hours, I’m never the one whining about being tired and wanting it to be over.
Live BBC radio recordings. They’re a great night out if you live near enough to London, and they’re free. “Live recording” might be an oxymoron, but hey. What’s not to like?
Snow. It’s not ‘bad weather’ to me. It’s rare enough to be special, it feels great underfoot, and it makes anything it touches beautiful. The only trouble is that it’s cold, and turns to slush afterwards.
The Scottish accent. Surely the best of all the ways to speak our native language?
Slick, clean websites. I try to make mine so as well. I hope you agree. I do go around it with a hoover every now and then.
God. I could have sounded all pious and put him first in the list, but I did say these weren’t in order, didn’t I? He made me, he loves me, he died for me, and he makes my life worth living. Seriously.
Silly signs. I still remember with great fondness the moment I walked past the sign by a car park that said “Toilets. Have you paid and displayed?”
Interesting facts. For example, if someone tells you that something happened in Britain between 3 and 13 September 1752, do not believe them. The dates did not exist, because we were switching calendars at the time.
Devon spring water. Nice, isn’t it?
Marmite, liquorice, white chocolate, lasagne and watermelon. Not together, you understand.
Acting, dancing, miming and performing. I’m not afraid of the stage, and people generally seem to quite like it when I’m there, so everyone’s a winner.
Making people laugh. There are few things that feel better than this. And no, you don’t need to be morbid, sexual, racist or even swear to do it.
Serious musicals. Most musicals are good for a couple of hours’ harmless fun, but the ones that really get me are the ones with layers — The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Blood Brothers and Billy Elliot are the best I’ve seen so far.
The Jurassic Park theme. I still think it’s one of the most beautiful film scores ever written.
Country, comedy and cabaret music. Oh, and The Final Countdown by Europe.
Roller-coasters. The faster, higher and twistier the better. I haven’t found my limit yet.
Driving on windy country roads. This may be related to the above.
Learning interesting bits of languages. For example, I know how to say in Finnish, “I’m burning; don’t panic.”
Playing on words, and playing with words. See what I did there?
Melodramatic sunsets. And sunrises, though you do have to get up at the crack of dawn for those. So to speak.
Journeys. It’s not just the destination that I look forward to; I love the travelling as well. And somehow journeys are especially exciting when they begin with an early start.
New books and magazines. Not what’s written in them, but what the pages feel like when you turn them. There’s just something about it.
Walking at night. When even familiar streets and paths feel different and exciting. Pretty lit up landmarks in the city, and blankets of awesome stars in the country.
Total solar eclipses. I travelled to Devon for the 1999 one, and it was cloudy. I travelled to China for the 2009 one, and it rained. But one day…
