Facebook is like a box of chocolates

You never know what you’re going to get! One moment you’re poring over pictures from your best friend’s recent holiday, the next you’re reading insights into the life of a person you met once at a bus stop.

It’s all very interesting, and stories like the one I recently heard of a friend being reunited with a long lost godparent are touching examples of the amazingness of this gift. Facebook is a gift, after all. I quite like to browse the profiles of people I barely know every now and then. Who needs Hello magazine? (I didn’t say that.)

But be warned! The default setting is for everything you post to be visible to “everyone”, which means the wider Web, including through Google. I’ve set mine to “Friends only” which restricts things nicely. And I hear there’s a way to restrict posts to particular groups of friends too, which I want to learn how to do. Then, under proper control, the gift of Facebook will be even more beautiful.
