So who’s fasting?

Lent, which starts tomorrow and runs to Holy Saturday, is a time for me to give up something I love, so that (a) I prove to myself that I can live without it, and more importantly (b) I can spend the time I would have given it, on things that deepen my relationship with God. Praying, walking, being productive at work, creativity, that sort of thing.

You might have noticed that Lent is 46 days long but is only a 40-day fast. Sundays are supposed to be feast days, so they’re not included. That’s the Western Church way. There are some other ways to get your 40 days, as shown in the diagram. I’m sure you can think of even more inventive ones.

All you have to do now is decide what to give up!

Remember: giving up chocolate (or any food) is great — but if the motivation is primarily to lose weight, that’s not a fast, that’s a diet.
